$448,000 in College Scholarships Awarded to 104 Exceptional Southern California High School Seniors

(05/22/2008)

On Thursday, May 22, 104 of the Southland’s brightest high school seniors receive $448,000 in college scholarships from Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Southern California. The 5 p.m. gala, hosted by the McDonald’s Operators’ Association of Southern California (MOASC), celebrates the students’ commitment to academic achievement and community service.

The recipients of the four RMHC scholarship programs: RMHC/African-American Future Achievers, RMHC/Asian Pacific American Students Increasing Achievement, RMHC/Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources, or RMHC/Scholars, hail from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties. The scholarship funds can be used towards tuition or expenses at the college or university of the recipients’ choice.

“We’re excited to see so many young adults make a tremendous effort to work hard and stay motivated in order to pursue their dreams,” said Ti Chang, local McDonald’s owner/operator and president of MOASC. “I am proud to be a part of an organization that acknowledges the importance of higher education and helps improve the lives of our future leaders.”
Students were selected to receive an RMHC scholarship based their grade point average, community involvement, letters of recommendation, and financial need.

Scholarships are jointly funded by grants from the global and Southern California chapters of RMHC and the fundraising efforts of Southern California McDonald’s owner/operators and corporate staff. The administrative costs for the scholarship programs and recognition dinner are underwritten by MOASC.

Since 1990, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California (RMHCSC) and MOASC have awarded more than $3 million in scholarship funds to students who reside in Southern California’s five-county area of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura.

The four scholarship programs are part of RMHCSC, now celebrating over 30 years of helping children and families in need. Committed to improving the health and well-being of children in Southern California, RMHCSC also operates Ronald McDonald Houses located in Loma Linda, Los Angeles, Orange and Pasadena, with one on the way in Long Beach, which serve as a home-away-from-home for seriously ill children and their families being treated at nearby hospitals; Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times provides free sleep-away camp experiences for kids with cancer and their families and a Community Grants Board that has awarded more than $13 million since 1987 to over 600 local Southern California charities that directly benefit children.

MOASC is comprised of more than 600 franchised and company owned restaurants in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties.
