More Than $300,000 in College Scholarships Awarded to 86 Southern California High School Seniors

(06/06/2009)

Eighty six of Southern California’s brightest and most accomplished high school seniors received more than $300,000 in college scholarships from Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Southern California through four programs: RMHC/African-American Future Achievers, RMHC/Asian Pacific American Students Increasing Achievement, RMHC/Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources and RMHC/Scholars. The recipients reside in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties and were selected based on their grade point average, community involvement, letters of recommendation and financial need.

“This year’s scholarship recipients were chosen from the most highly competitive pool in the history of this program,” said Ti Chang, local McDonald’s owner/operator and president of McDonald’s Operators’ Association of Southern California (MOASC). “We are proud to acknowledge their hard work and know that they will be just as successful in their college career and future goals.”

The scholarship recipients were honored during an awards gala Saturday, June 6th at the Hyatt Regency Irvine Hotel, which was hosted by KTLA’s Michaela Pereira. The administrative costs for the recognition dinner and the scholarship programs are underwritten by MOASC. Scholarships are jointly funded by grants from the global and Southern California chapters of RMHC and the fundraising efforts of Southern California McDonald’s owner/operators and corporate staff.

Since 1990, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California (RMHCSC) and MOASC have awarded more than $3.3 million in scholarship funds to students from Southern California’s five-county area.

The four scholarship programs are part of RMHCSC, which has been committed to providing comfort, care and support to children and families in Southern California. RMHCSC also operates four Ronald McDonald Houses, which serve as a home-away-from-home for seriously ill children and their families being treated at nearby hospitals, in Loma Linda, Los Angeles, Orange and Pasadena, with one on the way in Long Beach; Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, which provides free sleep-away camp experiences for kids with cancer and their families and a Community Grants Board that has awarded more than $14.4 million since 1987 to over 700 local Southern California charities that directly benefit children.

MOASC is comprised of more than 600 franchised and company owned restaurants in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties.
