From volunteers to family... meet Happy Huggers, Hiromi Hiraoka and Ryan Bell

How did you first get involved with Ronald McDonald House® Orange County?

We joined the Tustin Host Lions Club in 2024, and through that experience met a fellow Lions member, Wes Thoroughman, who has been a longtime Ronald McDonald House volunteer. When we learned that Ronald McDonald House Orange County is an approved Lions District project, we wanted to learn more. We signed up for volunteer orientation, took a tour of the House — and we were immediately hooked.

What does being both a volunteer and a Happy Hugs member mean to you?

Volunteering at the House and supporting fundraising efforts at special events is incredibly meaningful, but being a Happy Hugs member takes that connection even deeper. It means being part of the Ronald McDonald House family. Through Happy Hugs gatherings, we’ve built genuine friendships with people we now see regularly outside of volunteering, and that sense of community has become just as special as the service itself.

What's one moment that really stuck with you while volunteering?

The quiet, one-on-one conversations with families always stay with us — especially those moments when a parent just needs someone to listen. Seeing the strength, hope, and gratitude in the midst of such difficult circumstances is humbling, and it’s a powerful reminder of why this House matters so much.

What keeps you coming back?

So many things. The heartfelt conversations with families. The boisterous kiddos and siblings with their unstoppable spirit. The warm, welcoming House staff — from the guest services associates like Dani and Molly, who greet us by name, to Executive Director Noel — we feel appreciated and truly valued every time we walk through the doors. The volunteers have become dear friends, and the generosity of donors and supporters continually inspires us. Seeing them at the Gala, the Golf Tournament, the Walk, and throughout the year reminds us that this incredible community comes together in so many ways to keep the House running.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining Happy Hugs or volunteering at the House?

Do it. Becoming a Happy Hugs member and volunteering our time to support families with a child receiving medical treatment has been far more rewarding than we ever imagined. The impact goes both ways — you give, and you receive so much in return. We couldn’t recommend it more.
